Zach Rabe had to
decide on committing to play baseball or football at the post secondary level.
The University of
Calgary football Dinos
are thankful he chose the latter, signing a U Sports Letter of Intent to pursue
a football career with the Dinos.
“I love the
energy of football compared to baseball. I like the atmosphere and physicality
of football,” stated Rabe of his decision to forego baseball opportunities at
various Junior College programs in Arizona and
Indiana for the gridiron at Calgary. Rabe played on various elite travel
teams for baseball and was involved with the Okotoks Dawgs U18 program playing
shortstop.
The 6’, 170 lbs.
receiver from Cochrane High played on three Alberta 3A Provincial Championship teams
with the Cobras under Head Coach Rob McNab. While with the Cobras he was a
starter for two seasons. Prior to playing for the Cobras, Zach played bantam
football for the Cochrane Lions.
“Zach Rabe is a high end all around athlete. He
has excellent hands, and is a good playmaker with the ball,” stated University of Calgary recruiting coordinator Matt
Berry.
“Calgary has a good
football program that is close to my home. I can play with my friends, and it
is a winning program that feels like a family,” stated the 17-year-old Rabe who
was born in Corpus Christi, Texas,
but has lived in Canada
for the past six years. Rabe was recruited by UBC, Simon Fraser, and Guelph and
will take Arts courses.
His father,
Grant, played varsity baseball and football at Tarleton
State University
in northern Texas,
pitching in baseball and was a tight end in football.
He is the son of
Grant and Laura Rabe.
