Just when Canada West opponents
thought they did not have to deal with a Woodson anymore on the field for theUniversity
of Calgary Dinos, along comes another one.
Anthony Woodson was one of the
top players in Canada West football for the five years while playing for the University
of Calgary. Younger brother Robbie is now making a name for himself on the field, despite being a true freshman in
2013.
The elder Woodson, now with the
Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League was a Canada West all-star
and 2nd team all-Canadian in 2010. Despite being plagued by injuries
Anthony was one of the top all-purpose running backs to wear a Dinos uniform.
Robbie started three games during
the regular season and the Dinos conference semi-final win 38-24 over UBC in
2013. He dressed for two games as a reserve and specialty team player but was
forced to miss three games due to an ankle sprain midway through the season.
What was special for Robbie was
that in his first start against the University
of Manitoba on September 14, older
brother Anthony was able to see him play as the Argos just happened to be playing the Calgary
Stampeders the following evening at McMahon.
“It was pretty cool, to have him
(Anthony) here for my first start. That was extra motivation,” Robbie stated.
“It was kind of funny for Anthony
to watch me now, as I watched him,” says Robbie who has made his presence felt
with eight solo tackles and one fumble recovery this year.
Football has been a part of the
Woodson family. Their father, Tony played professionally in the CFL with both
Ottawa and Calgary and in the National Football League with the Denver Broncos
and now coaches in the Calgary Minor football system.
Robbie was heavily recruited but
elected to stay in Calgary.
“My brother came up through the program and could not pass it up,” Robbie
stated. The Dinos are glad he did.
Both Anthony and Robbie are
graduates of the St. Francis
High School in Calgary
and the Cowboys minor football program. Both are pursing similar programs at
the University of
Calgary. Anthony
graduated from the Haskayne School of Business majoring in petroleum land
management while Robbie is majoring in Economics.
