Defensive back Hunter Turnbull and Linebacker Tanner Doll are following their
father’s paths on the football field. They are however taking a different
route, than their fathers, in playing for the Dinos.
Hunter Turnbull is a defensive
back just like his father, Bill. But unlike Bill, he chose to be a Dino, rather
than attend Wilfrid Laurier University. Bill was a starting Defensive Halfback
for legendary coach Tuffy Knight and the Golden Hawks in the mid-1970’s.
Following his college career Bill played professionally in the Canadian
Football League for three seasons with Toronto and Hamilton. Bill is now a
successful businessman in Calgary.
Hunter as a true freshman in 2012
dressed for every game and started in the Mitchell Bowl. In 2013, Hunter has
started every game at Free Safety. A graduate of Henry Wisewood High School in
Calgary, Hunter was a multi-sport athlete and a member of the Alberta
Provincial Football Team in 2010 and 2011.
“Calgary was home, I liked the program and the school,”
states Hunter who was heavily recruited in his senior year receiving offers
from Alberta, Saskatchewan, UBC in Canada West as well as many Ontario schools,
including Laurier.
Tanner Doll is also playing the
same position, Linebacker, his father played. Garrett patrolled the middle for
the Alberta Golden Bears under Head Coach Jim Donlevy from 1981-84. Garret was
a three year starter for the Golden Bears and a Conference All-Star. He was a
member of the Alberta team that lost in the 1981 Vanier Cup. Garret was
selected in the second round (11th overall) in the 1985 CFL Draft by
the Calgary Stampeders. He played three seasons for the Stamps before embarking
on a teaching career that has taken him to China
and eventually back to St. Albert, Alberta where he is now a principal.
Like Hunter, Tanner was heavily
recruited coming out of High School in St. Albert,
especially by the Universities of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
“I came to Calgary
because I wanted to play for Blake Nill,” Doll states, “but I did have pressure
from the community to stay at Alberta,”
Doll admits whose father coached him throughout his youth and High School
career.
Before joining the Dinos, Tanner
was a member of the Alberta Provincial Team for two years and also played for
Team Canada Junior. After seeing limited action as a freshman, Tanner starts at
middle linebacker and is the long snapper in 2013.
Both Hunter and Tanner are proud
to be Dinos, even though their parents played for outstanding coaches and other
programs in the CIS.
